The location of Lofilab AS is at Steine, nearby Stamsund. Steine lies in the community of Vestvågøy, which is a part of the Lofoten islands.
At this location Lofilab AS has built an artificial lagoon, where the start feeding plant is installed. Through a period of 15 years, the production facilities has undergone several stages of evolution, and now it has a capacity of 2,5 million juveniles But Lofilab AS is still growing, and based on established infrastructure at Steine, we are designing a new lagoon associated to the start feeding premises. This will help us increase the production capacity, and also officiate as a guarantee in case of problems at the existing lagoon. In 1996, Lofilab AS emerged from being a semi public R&D company, to becoming a commercial producer of cod juveniles and halibut. We ended our work with halibut in 2003. A total of 25 million Norwegian kroner are invested in the company, where about 19 million Norwegian kroner are invested after 1995. Furthermore, the brood stock, developed from self produced cod, is a valuable asset for our future production of cod juveniles. Advantages The lagoon is extremely well suited to bring up natural plancton. In addition we have the possibility to harvest other species of plancton, larger sized, from the inlet outside the lagoon. Altogether this will increase the production capacity, and make it possible to accomplish 3-4 production turns. Power plant can manipulate the temperature of the water, and make it ideal through the stadium of hatchery. The investments made by Lofilab in this matter, provides a stabile temperature of the water, insuring us from the unsteady weather in Lofoten during the summer. Today, the production facility emerges as one of the most complete areas within the making of marine fish. The production could easily be increased from 1-2 million of cod juveniles at today’s level, looking (forward) to 2- 3 million of cod juveniles in the near future.
